Wallow Wide
“In Wyoming, the frozen ground couldn’t care less about your badge. You can follow the law to the letter and let injustice win, or tarnish your star to do what is right. In Wallow Wide, nobody walks away unscathed from that choice.”
Wallow Wide is a contemporary police role-playing game with the atmosphere of a harsh neo-Western, designed as a great American drama series. In the grand and merciless landscapes of northwestern Wyoming, the take over the day-to-day running of the Wallow Wide Sheriff’s Office, seat of Fairmont County. Caught in a vise between the rigidity of a fragmented legal framework and the raw violence of human nature, they play lawkeepers facing the oldest dilemma of the West: enforce the law or deliver justice.

The game
Three d10, keep the median die. Violence that is rare, sudden and lethal. Drama Points to turn the spotlight on.

Game description
Wallow Wide offers an immersive experience that brings the narrative codes, the pacing and the psychological depth of prestige television series to the role-playing table. The plot is not reduced to a simple collection of forensic clues: above all it explores the characters’ private fault lines, the unspoken things of a rural community and the moral consequences of every decision. The game places the characters before a permanent fracture between the law — that body of written statutes, nitpicking procedures and administrative borders — and justice, that moral imperative which sometimes demands breaking the rules to protect the innocent.
The game system rests on a fluid mechanic of three ten-sided dice in which you keep the median value, ensuring an intuitive and realistic resolution of actions. In this setting, violence is never gratuitous or heroic: it is rare, sudden and especially lethal. A single bullet can end a career or cost a life, giving armed face-offs the stifling tension of a duel at dusk. To support the dramaturgy of American series, the game includes Drama Points. This resource lets the steer the staging, turn the spotlight on their character in a showpiece scene, reveal a touching vulnerability or turn a critical situation around with a dramatic masterstroke.

03
The county
Windswept plains, conifer forests, the foothills of Yellowstone: when the blizzard falls, the county becomes a white desert.
03
Context and focus on the universe
Fairmont County stretches across northwestern Wyoming, backed against the wild foothills of Yellowstone National Park. It is a land of silent immensity, covered with endless plains swept by icy winds, dense conifer forests and menacing rocky peaks. In this grand setting nestles Wallow Wide, a quiet little town and the county seat, with its main street, its shops, its town hall and its diner. Here, nature imposes its pitiless rhythm. When winter settles in, the blizzard turns the whole county into a hostile white desert, cutting ranches off for weeks on end and burying bodies and secrets alike under five feet of frost-hardened ground. Solitude weighs on the mind, and every police call-out miles from any help takes on the feel of a survival test.

04
The law
The Wild River Reservation, the FBI, the DEA, the mayor, the oil companies: every border stalls the investigation a little more.
04
Context and focus on the universe
This already harsh territory is fractured by a complex administrative carve-up that hampers law enforcement. Fairmont County is literally cut in two by the Wild River Indian Reservation. As soon as a suspect or a victim crosses the invisible line of the reservation, the jurisdiction of the Wallow Wide Sheriff’s Office stops dead. There, the law falls exclusively to the tribal police and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This legal boundary feeds daily frustrations, clashes of authority and gray areas where resentments thrive. On top of this fracture come the interventions of federal agencies such as the FBI or the DEA as soon as a crime goes beyond county lines, as well as the political pressure exerted by the mayor of Wallow Wide, who is keen to protect the interests of his town and its notables before exposing the truth.
Behind the peaceful appearance of the little town of Wallow Wide and the raw beauty of the surrounding landscapes, Fairmont County is a social powder keg. Old cattle-ranching families see their ancestral lands coveted by mining and oil companies ready to do anything to exploit what lies beneath. Small rural schemes rub shoulders with automatic-weapons trafficking and methamphetamine distribution networks fed by unscrupulous biker gangs. At the heart of the tensions, the revenue generated by the casino on the reservation stirs up the envy and jealousy of a fringe of the local population, reawakening stubborn discrimination that the Sheriff’s Office has to defuse every day to prevent a communal blaze.

The PaT
Deputies and sworn consultants: a fragile team, pulled in every direction by its demons.
05
Who the will play
The do not play fearless, flawless vigilantes, but ordinary women and men entrusted with a heavy responsibility. Attached to the Wallow Wide Sheriff’s Office as deputies or sworn consultants, they form a fragile team, united by the ordeal of fieldwork but pulled in every direction by their respective demons.
The first season of the game features contrasting, complementary psychological profiles. A table might bring together James Matthews, a young deputy catapulted into the role of acting sheriff after a local tragedy, crushed by his father’s exemplary reputation and forced to navigate between his ideals of justice and the maneuvers of the town’s mayor; Ann-Victoria Winters, an investigator and photographer who flatly refuses to carry a firearm, back in Wallow Wide to find out what happened to her mother, who vanished mysteriously; Asha Cheona, a Cheyenne police officer of remarkable tactical rigor, rejected by the reservation’s Shoshone police and hired by the Sheriff’s Office for her exemplary composure; or Ashton Morrison, a former Texas Ranger broken by the loss of his loved ones, who drowns his memories in bourbon and pursues a personal vendetta against a criminal on the run.
Each member of the team carries a heavy past that directly shapes how they are played. Faced with an uncooperative suspect, a warrant refused by the judge or a victim abandoned by public assistance, each will react according to their own wounds, creating intense friction within the Wallow Wide Sheriff’s Office itself.

Your investigations
Patrols on Route 287, crime scenes under the snow, tight interrogations, wrenching moral dilemmas.

What the will do
In Wallow Wide, the are the engine of the story and the heart of the series. Their ethical choices, their renunciations and their bold strokes decide the dramatic course of every episode and build the memory of Fairmont County.
In practice, the characters patrol the deserted ribbons of asphalt along Route 287 and answer emergency calls at isolated farms. They secure chilling crime scenes under the snow, lift tire tracks and collect physical evidence with the limited means of a rural police force. They conduct tight psychological interrogations against cagey suspects in the Sheriff’s Office, negotiate unofficial compromises with Native American police chiefs in the middle of the night, and endure the wrath of a county judge who is a stickler for legal procedure.
Above all, they must face wrenching moral dilemmas in which the letter of the law becomes the enemy of common sense. Should they turn a blind eye to an offense committed by a desperate teenager to spare him prison, or charge him according to the prosecutor’s directives? Should they illegally cross the reservation border to catch a predator before the evidence disappears under the blizzard? Finally, when words are no longer enough and the hunting rifles come out, the characters must engage in armed confrontations of unvarnished brutality, where every shot engages their moral and legal responsibility.

Inspirations
The universe and tone of Wallow Wide have their roots in contemporary crime fiction, the Western revival and the masterpieces of televised crime drama:
Craig Johnson and his Walt Longmire literary saga, adapted as a television series, which is the game’s matrix reference for its geographic anchoring in Wyoming, its melancholy humanism and the deep bond between white and Native communities.
Taylor Sheridan with his landmark works Wind River, Yellowstone and Sicario, for the dry violence that erupts without warning, the tragedy of the Native American reservations and that vision of a grand but pitiless territory where human laws fade before the harshness of the environment.
The drama series Justified and Banshee, for the unflinching portrait of deep rural America, the family clans that make the law and those borderline lawmen forced to use force to impose a kind of balance.
Joel and Ethan Coen as well as Noah Hawley with the film and the series Fargo, for the portrait of the tragic mediocrity of ordinary criminals, the atmosphere of a small town numbed by the cold and the methodical tenacity of dogged investigators in the face of the absurdity of chaos.

Number of and session length
The game is calibrated for a table of one game master and 3 to 5 .
Game sessions call for slots of 3 to 6 hours, or longer for tables that favor intimate exchanges, heavy silences and verbal jousting during interrogations.
Wallow Wide lets you tackle police cases wrapped up in a single session, as special episodes or as introductory games like Bloody Christmas. Even so, the game fully comes into its own in the structure of a complete season. Conceived as a multi-episode television series, the campaign lets you weave the through-line of a major criminal investigation together with the personal development of the characters, gradually revealing the secrets of Fairmont County and letting the live with the lasting consequences of their moral judgment calls.
